Mastering the Art of Cooking a Perfectly Rare Rump Steak on the BBQ

There's something special about grilling a juicy, perfectly cooked rump steak on the barbecue. The combination of smoky flavors and tender meat creates a culinary experience like no other. If you're looking to impress your friends and family with your grilling skills, we've got you covered! In this blog post, we'll guide you through the process of cooking a rump steak to rare perfection on a BBQ using three secret ingredients: beef dripping, beef Oxo, and Worcestershire sauce.

Step 1: Choosing the Right Rump Steak
To ensure a delicious result, start by selecting a high-quality rump steak from your local Farmers Pantry Butchers. Look for a steak with good marbling and fat, as it adds flavour and tenderness. Aim for a thickness of around 1.5 to 2 inches, which will allow for an even cook and a juicy centre.
Step 2: Preparing the Steak
Remove the steak from the refrigerator and let it come to room temperature for about 30 minutes. This step ensures even cooking throughout the meat. Meanwhile, preheat your BBQ to high heat. We recommend using Camel Thorn logs or hardwood charcoal, both available from our Llantwit Major, Penarth and Whitchurch shops.
Step 3: Seasoning the Steak
Season the steak generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper on both sides. This simple seasoning enhances the natural flavours of the meat. For an extra kick, you can add a sprinkle of your favourite herbs or spices. Dawie apples beef dripping directly to the steak and BBQ, we’d recommend cutting off a chunk and applying.

Step 4: Cooking the Steak
Place the seasoned rump steak directly on the hot grill and cook for approximately 3 to 4 minutes on each side for a rare finish. Adjust the cooking time according to your desired choice.
Step 5: Adding the Secret Ingredients
Whilst cooking, sprinkle and rub on beef oxo as desired and splash on the Worcestershire sauce.
Step 6: Resting the Steak
Once your steak is cooked to perfection (we like it rare!) let it rest for a few more minutes. This resting period allows the meat to reabsorb its juices, resulting in a tender and flavourful steak.
Step 7: Serving and Enhancing the Flavour
Slice the rested rump steak against the grain to ensure maximum tenderness. Drizzle a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce over the slices if desired or season with salt and pepper, enhancing the meat's natural flavors and adding a tangy kick.
Conclusion:
Cooking a rump steak to rare perfection on the BBQ is a skill worth mastering. By following these steps and utilizing the secret ingredients of beef dripping, Oxo, and Worcestershire sauce, you'll create a culinary masterpiece that will leave your guests impressed and craving more. So fire up that grill, grab a juicy rump steak, and get ready to enjoy a sensational dining experience!
